Please note that the article below does not represent the official position of the South Skyline Association and consists solely of the thoughts and opinions of a local resident.

I just have a small submission about my personal experience to share of hiking on our trails and bicycles.

For the past 12 years, I’ve walked my two corgi’s three miles every day – rain or shine – mostly in Sanborn Skyline Park. (I’m surrounded by MROSD but no dogs are allowed near my home). One of our favorite trails is the John Nicholas Trail. We enjoyed watching it being built over several years and then hiking on it when it opened up – a truly special trail.

I will admit, I was a bit concerned when the Nicholas trail was opened up to mountain bikes. Corgis aren’t always quick at “jumping out of the way” of fast bikes. My fears were unfounded. The bike riders on the John Nicholas Trail, and the long length of Skyline Trial, have been unfailingly polite. They give good warning. Some get off their bikes to pet the dogs. They always slow down and give way. One stopped to help me with a rescue of another hiker who had fallen and needed to be taken out on a stretcher.

In my experience, we are cheerfully, successfully sharing the trails at Sanborn Skyline Park, as we each just think a tiny bit about the fun of others. I’d love to see the State Parks follow this model by opening up more trails to both bike riders and dog hikers too! We CAN all get along.

Cheers,

Frances
